Cast iron or aluminium – what is actually the difference?
It is a question we receive on a regular basis: the difference between cast iron and aluminium lies primarily in the material used in manufacturing, which provides different properties and benefits.
Cast iron is an alloy consisting mainly of iron and carbon. Aluminium is a metallic element that occurs naturally in the Earth’s crust. It is the most common metal in the Earth’s crust and accounts for 8 % of the Earth’s mass.
Cast iron – robust and timeless
Cast iron is a highly durable material that can last for generations. It is used to create stable and robust lighting fixtures.
Cast iron has a strong structure and can withstand high stresses and loads. It is also known for its resistance to weathering and corrosion, making it suitable for outdoor lighting.
The sturdy construction reduces the risk of the lighting fixture shaking or vibrating. The material also provides a traditional and rustic aesthetic and can be formed into various shapes and sizes, offering many design options for lighting fixtures. It can be cast with detailed patterns and ornamentation to create visually interesting fixtures.
If you choose cast iron, you should bear in mind that it can be about four times as heavy as aluminium, which may require a robust facade to mount the fitting to. For example, a rendered facade can be a good option for mounting aluminium lanterns.
Aluminium – light, durable and recyclable
Aluminium is a lighter material that is easy to machine and shape.
It is also a sustainable material and corrosion-resistant due to the thinly formed oxide layer on the surface. Aluminium is well suited for outdoor use as it can withstand mechanical stress and impacts.
It is also highly recyclable and can be melted down and converted into new products without losing its original properties. This makes aluminium a very sustainable and environmentally friendly choice.
How do they differ in design?
In terms of design, our classic aluminium luminaires are slightly more compact and available in several smaller models.
Classic cast-iron lamps are usually larger and coarser in their shape and are a brilliant match for truly old houses.
Summary
In summary, cast iron is heavier and more robust, whereas aluminium is lighter. The choice between cast iron and aluminium depends on individual preferences, style, and application.
